Quick answer · Nice 100M 2026

Nice 100M mandatory equipment: the key items to check

For the 2026 Nice 100M, the core equipment I plan around includes: a personal cup of at least 15 cl, at least 1 litre of water capacity, two working headlamps, a waterproof jacket with hood, an emergency blanket, warm head protection and warm/waterproof hand protection. Hot- and cold-weather additions may also be activated by the organiser.

This page shows my tested setup item by item. The final race-week instructions always take priority. For course context, see the Nice 100M course 2026; for broader preparation, see my 100-mile training plan for Nice.

Gear list · Nice 100M

Official requirements, my tested race setup and the few checks still open.

This is my personal working version of the Nice 100M mandatory gear list. The core setup is now settled and most important items have been used in training; the remaining work is packing, weather-dependent choices and a few practical checks.

I separate the gear I expect to carry as standard from additional hot- or cold-weather items. The final 2026 race instructions and any weather kit activated by the organiser always take priority.

Important: this is not an official UTMB page. It documents my own Nice 100M setup and testing. Always check the current official list and race-week communications for your own race.

Water supply At least 1 litre in bottles or bladder. 4 × 500 ml Salomon soft flasks physically carried at the start; ten 500 ml flasks available in total. 1.5 l bladder as backup. Ready · tested Start plan: two flasks with Tailwind and two empty/folded. The larger flask stock supports crew swaps and pre-filled rotation.
Two headlamps Two working headlamps, with spare batteries or power source. Petzl Nao RL + spare battery and Petzl Tikka + spare battery/batteries. Ready · tested The Nao RL has been used for long sessions and I have practised the battery change. The Tikka is the second lamp; no longer an open gear decision.
Emergency blanket Minimum 1.40 m × 2 m. Bergzeit First Aid Kit. Ready The kit is complete. It may be possible to pack it smaller.
Whistle Mandatory emergency signal. Integrated in the Salomon vest. Ready Fixed to the race vest.
Elastic bandage Self-adhering bandage for compression/fixation, minimum 100 cm × 6 cm. Bergzeit First Aid Kit. Ready I want it accessible, not buried at the bottom of the pack.
Food reserve Emergency food reserve. Precision Fuel PF90 gels. Pack separately Supply is available. A separate emergency reserve will be packed during the final race-kit build and kept outside the normal fueling calculation.
Waterproof jacket Hood, breathable membrane, taped seams and real weather protection. Salomon Bonatti Pro WP Jacket. Ready Part of the fixed race setup for mountain wind and rain.
Full leg coverage Full leg coverage when required by the applicable weather kit. Compressport Under Control Full Tight · T3. Cold-weather option Fits well. This is not part of my normal clothing plan; I carry/use it if the cold-weather requirements or forecast make it relevant.
Cap or Buff Sun protection and thermal regulation. Monte Rosa buff and Monte Rosa by UTMB cap. Ready Buff on my wrist during the day and later under the headlamp.
Warm long-sleeve layer Warm long-sleeved, non-cotton layer according to the applicable checklist. Craft Pro Wool Extreme X LS · size L. Night setup This is now my standard night layer. The Compressport 3D Thermo Hoodie is reserved for genuinely cold conditions rather than being the default layer.
Warm hat Additional head insulation when required by the cold-weather kit. Buff Beanie. Cold-weather option Only added when the cold-weather setup is relevant; otherwise I use a multifunctional Buff at night.
Waterproof glove system Warm hand protection plus weatherproof protection when required. Salomon CROSS WARM gloves + Salomon Bonatti waterproof overmittens. Ready · tested The two-layer system has been tested and the overmittens remain accessible in the vest. This is my solution for cold, wind and rain.
Waterproof overtrousers Waterproof trousers carried when required by the race kit. Salomon Bonatti WP Pant. Ready · rain-tested Tested in real rain. I can put them on and take them off over the race shoes.
ID Valid passport or ID card. Valid ID/passport. Ready Valid and already set aside for race travel.
Trail shoes + socks Closed, sturdy trail shoes suitable for mountain terrain. Start: Hoka Mafate Speed 4 + Salomon S/LAB Ultra Knee socks (LC2081300).
Levens: Hoka Speedgoat 7 + Action Running compression socks.
Two tested setups At Levens the shoe change is paired with dry socks. The Compressport Full Socks Oxygen are no longer a race option because they feel too restrictive.
Poles If I start with poles, I carry them for the whole race. Leki Micro Trail Race 125 cm + Salomon Custom Quiver Ultra Goat (LC2856600001). Ready · tested Pole and quiver setup is tested with a full vest and stays with me throughout the race.

Race-kit decisions

What changed after the latest gear audit

The list is no longer dominated by purchases. Most choices are settled and tested; the main updates are what is definitely in, what is conditional and what has been dropped.

Definitive

Night layer: Craft Pro Wool Extreme X LS

Size L. This is now the standard warm layer for the night. The Compressport 3D Thermo Hoodie is only a genuinely-cold-weather option.

Definitive

Waterproof gloves: CROSS WARM + Bonatti

The warm gloves and waterproof overmittens have been tested as a two-layer system and are accessible in the vest.

Definitive

Personal cup: Salomon Soft Cup Speed 150 ml

Exact race cup: LC1917600001. It satisfies the 150 ml role in my setup without relying on a capped flask.

Definitive

Four flasks at the start

I physically start with four 500 ml soft flasks: two with Tailwind and two empty/folded. Ten flasks are available for the wider crew rotation.

Dropped

Compressport Full Socks Oxygen

They feel too restrictive and are no longer part of the race plan. Start socks are Salomon S/LAB Ultra Knee; Levens reset socks are Action Running compression socks.

Planned reset

Levens: shoes, socks and clothing

Planned reset: Mafate Speed 4 → Speedgoat 7, dry Action Running socks and a clean Alzheimer Nederland shirt. The Nike ACG lower-body set remains optional.

New · definitive

Race belt: Compressport Race Belt V2

No safety pins and, more importantly, no awkwardness when changing into a clean shirt. The elastic, fully adjustable belt keeps the race number independent of my clothing and uses three fixed toggles.

Warm weather kit

What I add when heat becomes part of the race

These are weather-dependent additions. The final race-week forecast and the organiser’s activated kit determine what is actually carried.

Item What the organisation asks My setup Status My note
Sunglasses Warm weather kit; photochromic recommended. Julbo Ultimate Reactiv Performance 1-3. Ready I will take them anyway.
Sahara cap Protects head and neck from sun. Salomon CROSS+ Sahara cap. Hot weather only Ready, but only packed if the hot weather kit is activated.
Sunscreen SPF50 recommended. Small SPF50 tube. Still to buy One of the few remaining gear purchases.
Extra water capacity Increased capacity if heat conditions require it. Four-flask carry capacity; Salomon Soft Reservoir 1.5 l available as backup. Backup ready The bladder is backup, not my default system. If I keep it for later in the race, it goes in the Levens pack inside the same official drop bag.

Cold weather kit

Cold-weather additions: mostly solved, one item still open

The full tights, 3D Thermo Hoodie and Buff Beanie are available as cold-weather additions. Protective eyewear is the only real equipment purchase still open if the forecast and final instructions make it relevant.

Item What the organisation asks My setup Status My note
Protective eyewearProtection from snow, wind or debris if the cold-weather kit requires it.Snow/ski goggles not purchased yet.Weather-dependentI will only add this if the conditions or final race instructions make it relevant.
Extra cold layerAdditional insulation when conditions require it.Compressport 3D Thermo Hoodie + Under Control Full Tight + Buff Beanie.AvailableThese are additions to the normal setup, not default start clothing.

My race tools

Not everything is mandatory, but some things are essential

These items are not all official mandatory gear. They are part of my race plan, nutrition, navigation, power strategy and aid-station setup.

Item What the organisation asks My setup Status My note
Watch Not mandatory, but crucial for my race plan. Garmin Enduro 2. Ready Navigation, pacing, battery life, alerts, nutrition timing and intensity control.
Heart-rate strap Not mandatory, but part of my own data setup. Garmin HRM-Pro Plus. Ready More reliable heart-rate data than wrist HR, especially with cold, poles or long descents.
Power bank in race pack Not a standalone mandatory item, but part of my phone/lamp strategy. Nitecore NB10000 Gen3 Carbon Fiber Powerbank 10,000 mAh. Ready Goes in my race pack for phone, lamp and emergency power.
Bowl Personal race tool. Sea to Summit Frontier UL bowl. Ready Already in the vest.
Spork Personal race tool. Robens titanium spork. Ready Already in the vest.
Pole quiverPersonal carrying system.Salomon Custom Quiver Ultra Goat · LC2856600001.Ready · testedTested with the full vest and the Leki poles.
HeadphonesOptional personal item.Shokz OpenRun Pro 2.ReadyTake fully charged.
Race beltPersonal race-management tool; not mandatory.Compressport Race Belt V2 · Black · elastic 2 cm belt with three fixed toggles and an adjustable buckle.Bought · race choiceNo safety pins and no hassle when changing into a clean shirt. The race number stays independent of my clothing, while the elastic belt is easy to adjust. One short fit check with the full vest before Nice.
Foot / chafe kitPersonal preventive setup.Vette cetomacrogol + hotspot/blister kit.Final testOne final test in the exact race sock/short combination, especially on the feet.

Final checks

The few gear tasks that are genuinely still open

Mafate Speed 4 insole

Inspect for real wear or deformation. The damp squeak alone is not a reason to introduce a new insole concept this close to Nice.

Weather kit

Choose the normal setup versus hot- or cold-weather additions from the final forecast and organiser communications.

Race logistics

Synchronise the Warner Guide and aid-station cards with the single official drop bag: two clearly labelled inner packs for Saint-Sauveur and Levens.

Practical gear questions

Waterproof gloves, the 15 cl cup and other small details

What waterproof gloves am I using for the Nice 100M?

Salomon CROSS WARM gloves for warmth with Salomon Bonatti waterproof overmittens on top. I have tested the combination together rather than relying on one bulky glove.

Which 15 cl personal cup do I carry?

A Salomon Soft Cup Speed 150 ml (LC1917600001). It is a separate personal cup; my soft flasks are part of the hydration system.

What is my waterproof jacket?

The Salomon Bonatti Pro WP Jacket, combined with the Bonatti WP Pant when waterproof leg coverage is required.

What changes in the cold-weather kit?

The normal night layer remains the Craft Pro Wool Extreme X LS. For genuinely cold conditions I can add the Compressport 3D Thermo Hoodie, full tights and Buff Beanie, subject to the final race instructions.

My principle: I am not trying to create the lightest possible kit that just passes a check. I want a setup that is light enough to carry and reliable enough if I really need it.
